Top Government Officials Exchange Views Online with USTTI Alumni
On April 17, the USTTI hosted its first cyber forum of 2002 - "Preparing for the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference." Ambassador Michael R. Gardner, Chairman of the USTTI, was joined by USTTI Board Member, David Gross, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy at the U.S. Department of State and Head of the U.S. Delegation to the Plenipotentiary; former USTTI Board member, Kathleen Abernathy, Commissioner, Federal Communications Commission (FCC); Jack Gleason, from the Office of International Affairs at the National Telecom and Information Administration (NTIA), U.S. Department of Commerce, and longtime USTTI trainer and advocate, Raymond Crowell, Telecommunications Consultant, in responding to the viewpoints and questions of USTTI alumni around the world. It was a great opportunity for an interactive exchange of ideas concerning the important Plenipotentiary Conference that is coming up in September-October in Marrakesh, Morocco. The cyber forum was a great success, attracting many postings and lots of "hits," and we encourage you to review the transcript!

USTTI Recognizes the Efforts of the FCC's Barbara Cutts
Upon the conclusion of the FCC's recent spectrum management course, USTTI Chairman, Ambassador Michael R. Gardner, presented a beautiful crystal bowl to dedicated USTTI supporter and advocate, Barbara Cutts, Technical Assistance Liaison Officer and U.S. Representative for ITU Fellowships, FCC. This gift was presented in recognition of Barbara' tireless work in coordinating several USTTI courses each year for the FCC and of her outreach to countless communications professionals from the developing world. We are sure that many of our alumni, especially the hundreds of graduates of the FCC's 84 programs, will remember Mrs. Cutts and join the USTTI Board in applauding her ongoing efforts on behalf of the USTTI!

Television Broadcasting Programs Underway
This past Friday, Mr. Cesar Saavedra Pazos - Peru and Mr. Colin Lelis Sserubiri, Uganda, graduated from the USTTI's first television broadcasting program of 2002. They spent two intensive weeks at WMAZ-TV in Macon, Georgia gaining an overview of several aspects of television broadcasting. One of the graduates mentioned that "there was a great deal more to learn about U.S. television broadcasting than (he) had even imagined!" SCOLA Graduates its 10th Group of USTTI Scholars
Satellite Communications for Learning (SCOLA) just completed its 10th course in partnership with the USTTI. Their course, "Satellite Uplinking of Educational Television and Multimedia Services," has graduated 49 women and men from the developing world over the past 10 years, three of which recently left their McClelland, Iowa facilities after a week and a half of intensive training. A testimony to the great work being done by SCOLA is well stated by one recent graduate - "SCOLA helps the people of the world know each other by introducing one's language, culture, and ideology to another using modern technologies as a tool. This mission is a valuable one!"
